Dulwich Village is dominated by family houses and is a magnet for higher-income families because of the exclusive family homes, transport links into the City and central London and its world class schools. The area is unique. Walk through the village and you would not think for a moment that you are in the heart of south east London and just over 5 miles from the City. That it retains the feel of an English village is down to the Dulwich Estate Governors who have strictly overseen conservation and development in the area for over 400 years.
Dulwich village is also the name of the High Street and this is the central hub with excellent restaurants, bars, cafes, deli food shops and a wide range of other independent shops. Central to the area is the 72 acre Dulwich Park with its boating lake but in addition to this the whole area is characterised by open green spaces.
Dulwich is served by five local railway stations; North Dulwich, West Dulwich, East Dulwich, Sydenham Hill and Herne Hill – all less than approximately 15 minutes away from central London stations. North Dulwich and East Dulwich stations provide access to London Bridge and Herne Hill, West Dulwich and Sydenham Hill stations provide access to London Victoria.
Steeped in history and protected by the Dulwich Estate, the architecture of Dulwich Village is period and traditional, with a variety of Georgian properties surrounded by Victorian and Edwardian properties that came with the railways in the 1870s. Many properties have been renovated and extended to create contemporary homes. As a result there are a good selection of family homes; from magnificent detached houses to more familiar Victorian and Edwardian homes.
With so much green and open space there are huge opportunities for walkers and cyclists. On the periphery are other wonderful facilities such as the Herne Hill Velodrome (used for cycling events at the 1948 Olympics), the elegant Brockwell Lido, the Horniman Museum, the Dulwich Picture gallery and even a golf course, (Dulwich and Sydenham).
Dulwich is home to some of the most outstanding, high-achieving schools in the country and brings pupils here from all over London, both boarders and day pupils. There are 2 state primary schools, as well as three of London’s top independent schools: James Allen's Girls' School, Dulwich College and Alleyn’s.
